3…2…1. The countdown has begun.
This Sunday at 3 PM, the North Bend Theatre closes out its four‑part Science on Screen® series with a special, in-person presentation from renowned mycologist Daniel Winkler, followed by a screening of Matt Damon in The Martian.
Winkler’s talk, “Fungi & Humans in Space,” explores how the resilience and adaptability of fungi may one day support human survival beyond Earth. From radiation‑tolerant species to experimental “myco-tecture” building materials, he highlights the surprising ways fungi could help humans live in extreme environments, including the kind faced by Matt Damon’s character, scientist Mark Watney, on Mars.
“Daniel has a rare ability to make complex science accessible, funny, and memorable,” said Beth Burrows, owner of the North Bend Theatre. “His talk is as entertaining as the film it accompanies. You will be amazed to learn about the fungus that thrives at Chernobyl, actually consuming radiation as well as NASA’s buildings made of fungus! It’s a great blend of real science and bold imagination, a wonderful way to explore the final frontier.”
