Falling Leaves Can Mean Clogged Storm Drains and Localized Flooding in North Bend

Recent rain and light winds have left debris collecting around storm drains and culverts in North Bend. Public Works crews have been clearing drainage areas this week to help keep rainwater flowing and reduce the risk of localized flooding.

When leaves pile up in storm drains, they block rainwater from draining, which can lead to neighborhood flooding. Flooding can create safety concerns and damage property.

Storm Drain and Winter Weather Tips

To help prevent localized flooding and prepare for winter weather, the City of North Bend and Take Winter by Storm recommend:

  • Check storm drains near your home or business and make sure they are free of debris.
  • Use a rake to remove debris from storm drains and gutters. Dispose of leaves and branches in your yard waste bin or make a compost pile.
  • Do not rake or blow leaves into the street. These clog up storm drains and the City’s street sweeper.
  • Trim low-hanging branches along your street frontage so the City’s street sweeper can have clear access to the face of the curb without damaging the equipment.
  • Never remove a grate from a storm drain. This does not unclog the drain and creates hazardous conditions.
  • Maintain gutters, downspouts, rain barrels and private culverts by keeping them clear, flowing and directed away from structures and hillsides.
  • Build a kit. Create an emergency preparedness kit with at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food and water for your home and office. Kits prepared for vehicle road travel and winter weather evacuation go-kits are also advised.
  • Make a plan and practice the plan with your family and those who depend on you.
  • Stay informed and know the weather approaching so you are prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws our way.

Report excessive debris and damage in public right-of-way by clicking the “Report An Issue” button on the city’s website, www.northbendwa.gov. Call the Public Works after-hours emergency contact at (425) 736-7697 to report any major flooding or storm drain issues.
