Think March Madness, but with microphones. Thirty-two comedians from across North America will spend weeks crisscrossing Western Washington, surviving round after round before judges and audiences as the 46th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition returns to the North Bend Theatre on November 7 and 14.
Part tournament, part endurance test, the competition has become one of the most respected showcases for emerging and established comedians. Only a handful will advance through multiple rounds on the road before a champion is crowned.
This year’s field includes comics with national television credits, festival accolades, and enough unusual life experiences to fill several sitcom seasons. Meet an up-and-coming comic whose career goal is to make enough money that relatives start asking to borrow it. A Seattle comic who got married in a Denny’s with Mad Lib vows. A comedian who accidentally booked a European tour. Another whose bio takes the blame for the fall of the Roman Empire. And a performer who calls his act “intellectual absurdity.” That’s before any of them take the stage. Just wait until they get a microphone in their hands.
Unlike a traditional comedy tour, the audience helps decide who advances. Every show matters and so does every laugh.
“The Seattle International Comedy Competition has always been about discovery,” said Beth Burrows, owner of the North Bend Theatre. “Some of these comics are already on major television shows and streaming platforms. Others are on the verge of being discovered. The fun is that you never know which comedian you’re seeing right before they break through.”

It’s a rare kind of live entertainment, one with genuine stakes. No filters. No algorithms. No second takes. Just talented comedians, a microphone, and a room full of strangers to win over.
