A Tribute to Alex Trapp: A Life of Love, Art, and Nature

The Snoqualmie Valley art community is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved members, Alex Trapp, who tragically passed away on July 28th, 2024, following a motorcycle accident.

His passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him—particularly his wife, Jen, with whom he shared a deep and loving bond.

A Life Rooted in Nature

Alex’s life was shaped by the rugged landscapes and natural beauty of the areas where he grew up. Born in Modesto, California, and raised in the breathtaking environs of Yosemite National Park and Alturas, California, Alex developed a close relationship with nature from an early age. This connection to the outdoors became a cornerstone of his life and artistic expression.

Jen, Alex’s wife and constant companion for 17 years, recalls how his childhood experiences influenced his journey as an artist. “He was always deeply connected to the mountains and forests around him. Nature was more than just a backdrop for Alex; it was a source of inspiration and solace.”

This profound connection to nature would later manifest in Alex’s artwork, where he often depicted the landscapes he cherished. His paintings, filled with majestic mountains, serene beaches, and scenic vistas, were not just reproductions of what he saw but reflections of the peace and beauty he found in these places.

The Artist’s Journey

Alex’s path to becoming a celebrated artist was not a traditional one. He was largely self-taught, developing his skills through sheer determination and a relentless desire to capture the world around him.

After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2008, Alex found himself in Bend, Oregon, with Jen during a particularly challenging winter. Both had lost their jobs, and in need of an outlet, Alex turned to painting. Here, he began to explore landscapes as his primary subject, drawing inspiration from the surrounding mountains.

Jen fondly recalls how this new hobby quickly grew into a lifelong passion. “He started with landscapes, and it became clear that he had a natural talent for it. He spent countless hours watching videos, reading books, and practicing his craft. His dedication was incredible.”

Alex’s dedication to his art paid off, and his work began to gain recognition. He was particularly drawn to plein-air painting, a style that emphasizes painting outdoors and capturing the changing light and atmosphere of a scene. Over the years, Alex’s plein air works became highly sought, with some pieces selling before he even completed them.

His involvement in the local art community grew as well. Alex became a fixture at the Art Gallery of SnoValley, where he quickly made an impression with his generosity and approachable demeanor. As shared in a statement from the gallery, “People were drawn to his plein air style of oil painting, especially because the subjects were often taken from one of his many hiking trips in the area.”

Community and Impact

The Art Gallery of SnoValley played a significant role in Alex’s artistic journey. He was known for his skillful paintings and his kindness and willingness to engage with others.

“When in the gallery, he was always painting,” recalls fellow artists Charlene Burley and Minh Rosen. “Sometimes, he would let young children paint right on his painting in progress. He had such a special way with people, always welcoming with his smile and gentle ways.”

Alex’s involvement extended beyond creating art. He was also an active participant in local art events and workshops, often sharing his knowledge and passion with other artists. His contributions were recognized in various competitions, including winning second place in the Little Gems Plein Air Art Show in Anacortes with his “Evening Glow” painting in 2020.

That same year, he won the plein air contest at the Snoqualmie Paint Out with “The Wheel.” This annual event, hosted by the Snoqualmie Arts Commission, celebrates the tradition of outdoor painting. The popular vote chose Alex’s work to be featured on the event’s annual poster. His winning piece captured the community’s spirit and further solidified his reputation as a beloved local artist.

A Legacy of Love and Art

While Alex’s artistic achievements were numerous, his personal qualities profoundly impacted those who knew him. His wife, Jen, remembers Alex as always willing to help others. “Alex was a wonderful and giving person that would do anything for anyone. He was a free spirit and loved nature and traveling. His favorite saying was ‘Being lost IS the destination.'”

The community’s affection for Alex is evident in the outpouring of support for Jen during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign organized by friends is raising funds to help Jen with the overwhelming financial burden of medical bills and funeral expenses.

The campaign is a testament to the love and respect that Alex earned through his kindness, his art, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved.

Remembering Alex Through His Art

Alex’s art provides comfort and inspiration for those he left behind. His Mount Rainier and Cannon Beach paintings, in particular, hold special significance for Jen. “I love his Cannon Beach paintings. It was one of our favorite places to go. We went every year for our anniversary and Alex would always paint there. Those paintings always sold very fast.”

In the words of his friends at the Art Gallery of SnoValley, “The PNW art community lost a great talent and exceptional human. We send love and light to Alex’s wife and family during this difficult time.”
