‘You Are Here: Snoqualmonix’: Scott Rinckenberger Celebrates the Art of Backcountry Skiing

This fine art photography exhibit features a collection of pairings representing a deep love and appreciation for backcountry skiing and snowboarding in ’You Are Here: Snoqualmonix’

Scott Rinckenberger, acclaimed photographer and adventurer, will unveil a new winter show at his gallery.

What is Snoqualmonix?

Well, for one thing, it’s a sandwich you can find at the Laconia Market on Snoqualmie Pass. Baguette, brie, apple, prosciutto. Get it warmed up in the oven. Heavenly. It’s also the name that some locals have started championing for the steep, rugged mountains around Snoqualmie Pass. The name is a combination of Snoqualmie and Chamonix, the famous mountain village in France that is widely considered the epicenter of extreme skiing and alpinism. Here, it’s the Goldilocks zone, where the enterprising backcountry skier and ski mountaineer can draw endless lines on a perpetually shifting canvas.

This winter art show opening will feature a collection of pairings highlighting a deep love and appreciation for backcountry snowboarding and skiing in Snoqualmonix. In each of these image pairings, there’s a person sliding on snow, often in optimal conditions. You want to be that person in that moment. But that’s only part of the equation. The second image is focused on where that action is taking place—the objective gloriousness of the setting.

Deep in a mountain-splitting couloir, hemmed in by cliffs hundreds of feet high on all sides. At the tip-top of an impossible needle of snow. Slashing down a churning sea of frozen waves that would have any surfer frothing. To be an active participant in a landscape of immense scale and unrivaled beauty. Some call skiing an art. I won’t argue. Here is the canvas in all of its glory. What will you do with it?” – Scott Rinckenberger

You Are Here: Snoqualmonix’ is a collection of large-format, black-and-white photography that will leave the viewer awestruck by the dense, complex, raw, tricky, and rugged backcountry skiing and snowboarding accessible from Snoqualmie Pass.

A cultural center in the idyllic mountain town of North Bend, Scott’s gallery space features a rotating selection of his work, capturing images that celebrate the subtle and sublime elements that inspire his life in the mountains, the greater Snoqualmie Valley and beyond.

Scott specializes in photographing some of the most pristine and wild places accessible under human power. A lifelong mountain athlete, Scott’s work is steeped in an admiration for alpine ecosystems. His distinctively reductive compositions of these wild places have been recognized with international awards and art exhibitions and featured with some of the world’s most respected brands, including Apple, REI, OR and Patagonia.

As the preponderance of Scott’s photography is created in wilderness settings, his work is inextricably linked to the environment. Scott actively supports local and global environmental efforts through his commitment to 1% For The Planet while honoring the Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands Movement. He hopes this work will inspire people to seek experiences that spark a close examination of life, create a deep appreciation for its inherent beauty, and result in a lifelong commitment to explore, protect and become an integral part of the beautiful tapestry of nature.
