Torguson Skate Park Recognized for Outstanding Concrete Construction

On February 6, 2024, during a North Bend City Council meeting, Torguson Skate Park was honored with the International Award of Excellence in Concrete Construction from the American Concrete Institute (ACI). This prestigious award was given to both Si View Metropolitan Parks District and the City of North Bend.

The skate park secured 1st Place in the Decorative Concrete Category. The award ceremony was a highlight, with representatives from ACI and Grindline Skateparks, the company responsible for the park’s design and construction, in attendance at a Parks Commission meeting on January 24. Si View Metro Parks Commissioners Susan Kelly and Mark Joselyn were notable attendees.

At the City Council meeting, Bruce Chapman, representing ACI, praised the park, stating, “You now have in your community a world-class skateboard park.” He highlighted the significant community involvement in the design process and commended Grindline for their excellent work bringing this top-tier project to life.

Grindline Skateparks took the lead in designing and building the skate park, working under the guidance of Si View Metro Parks.

According to ACI’s website, Grindline collaborated with the North Bend community to design a nearly 13,000 ft² (1200 m²) concrete skatepark outfitted with exciting elements for all skill levels and a central gathering area. The park has a one-of-a-kind flow bowl, a pool-style bowl, and a large street skate area. The ready-mixed concrete of the skatepark was applied with the shotcrete method to achieve the smooth-flowing transitions, curves, and blends that were required by the design. The concrete and shotcrete were finished by hand troweling to a buttery smooth finish.

This recognition exemplifies the successful, collaborative partnership with the local parks district, which maintains and programs facilities and amenities on city properties such as Torguson Park.

The award presentation can be viewed on the City’s Media Center webpage.
