A major accident on State Route 18 near milepost 22 resulted in two injuries and significant traffic disruption on the evening of May 25, 2024. The collision involved three vehicles and closed the road for over seven hours.
According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the accident occurred at approximately 10:13 PM. Vehicle one, driven by a 25-year-old male from Bremerton, was traveling eastbound on SR-18.
The driver attempted to pass another eastbound vehicle, vehicle three and clipped its right rear bumper. This caused the vehicle to lose control, roll over, and skid into the westbound lane, colliding with vehicle two.
Vehicle two, driven by a 42-year-old man from Maple Valley, was heading westbound and tried to avoid the collision by moving to the right shoulder. Despite this, vehicle one struck vehicle two, causing both to come to rest in the westbound lane. Vehicle three, driven by a 51-year-old man, sustained reportable damage and stopped on the eastbound shoulder.
The man from Bremerton and his passenger, a 29-year-old man, also from Bremerton, were both injured and transported to Overlake Hospital. The driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and it is unknown if the passenger was buckled up. The driver faces possible charges of DUI and vehicular assault.
Fortunately, all the other drivers and passengers wore seatbelts and sustained no injuries.
The collision and subsequent investigation caused significant traffic disruption, with SR-18 being closed for seven hours and 20 minutes.
