State Champions: Mount Si High School Athletes tops in golf, distance running

Two Mount Si High School athletes took home 4A state titles over the past two weeks – one in golf and one in track.

Sophomore Drew Warford shot a 70 and 67 in the two-day State Championships at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick on May 22nd and 23rd, scoring 7 under for the tournament and taking the title by two shots over Tahoma’s Colt Sherrell.

Warford competed against 80 4A golfers and scored the best round during each day of the tournament.

Over the Memorial Day weekend at Tahoma High School, Mount Si HS junior distance runner Joe Waskom ran the 3200 race in a personal best time of 8:57, blowing away the competition by 15 seconds and earning him the 4A state title.

That time ranks Waskom 20th in the nation for the 3200 this year. He also finished 3rd in the 4A 1600 race with a time of 4:08.35, ranking him 8th in the nation.
