Local Snoqualmie Ridge Bakery, MyCakes, baked for a cause this week since being chosen to create of a very special, custom birthday cake. That cake is being donated through the generous work of an organization of volunteer bakers called Icing Smiles.
Icing Smile is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide critically-ill children and their siblings with unique, custom celebration cakes for birthdays, end-of-treatment parties and during extended hospitalizations.
Icing Smiles is the brainchild of Executive Director, Tracy Quisenberry, who recognized the impact a special cake has on a child. A cake baker herself, she founded Icing Smiles October 2009. Through her organization she shares the wonder of a custom cakes with kids who sometimes cannot participate in the ordinary, everyday experiences of childhood like birthday parties.
Since its creation, Icing Smiles has partnered with volunteer bakers in all 50 states, including some of the country’s top cake artists like Anne Heap, Elisa Strauss, Joshua John Russell, John Auburn and Norm Davis. Icing Smiles now has over 12,000 Facebook followers and is continually working to capitalize on that momentum. Local Snoqualmie Bakery, MyCakes, is proud to be a member of the Icing Smiles organization.
Recently, Icing Smiles received a custom cake request for a young Issaquah girl celebrating her 5th birthday today, April 27. The recipient, Claire, suffers from a very rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a condition that requires her to continually undergo bone marrow transplants. Frequent hospitalizations have made it a very tough year for Claire and her family. You can learn more about Claire’s journey on her CaringBridge page.
Claire requested a Dream Cake with a Disney theme. MyCakes owner, Cynthia Golpe, made that special cake happen, creating nothing short of a work of art. Is it almost too pretty to eat? We’ll have to ask Claire. Happy 5th Birthday, Claire!
