Home security and safety company Safewise – which provides annual rankings of the safest cities in states across the country – recently released its 2018 Safest Cities in Washington list where Snoqualmie landed at the top.
Various safety websites do these online safe cities rankings and Snoqualmie has landed fairly high many times, but had never held the #1 ranking. Prior to this, #3 was as high as the growing city had been ranked.
Safewise used 2016 2016 FBI crime report and population data. According to their website, “cities that fell below identified population thresholds or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were excluded from the ranking system.”
The scores is were based on violent crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, robbery) stats, as well as property crimes (arson, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft). Crimes stats were organized per 1000 residents to more fairly compare different sized cities. Each city was evaluated and ranked based on its violent crime rate. In case of a tie, the number of property crimes was considered.
Washington State itself boasts a crime rate lower than the national average. All cities on the list had property crimes rates rates less than half of the state average. Snoqualmie just barely inched out Mercer Island for the top spot.
For Snoqualmie’s population of 13,713, violent crime per 1,000 was .22. Property crime was 17.06 per 1,000. Of the total crime reported in Snoqualmie, 1.28% was categorized as violent and 98.72% was property crime.
