Opinion | Concerns About the State of Our Democracy

We believe many actions by the current administration run counter to established American values and laws, actions that are outrageous and directly threaten our country’s historical underpinnings and progress. Here are just some of those actions:

  1. It is illegal to attempt to overthrow a lawful election and threaten the life of the Vice President.
  2. It is illegal to eliminate birthright citizenship. This is a basic right granted in the Constitution.
  3. It is illegal to suppress the freedom of the press by refusing access to disliked members.
  4. It is immoral to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. We are already seeing the effects.
  5. It is immoral to support oppressive and imperialist regimes.
  6. It is immoral to reverse earned human rights, such as LGBTQ, women’s reproductive rights, civil rights, and DEI revocation.
  7. It is immoral to withdraw from the World Health Organization.
  8. It is stupid to defund clean energy development.
  9. It is immoral to undermine the justice system by pardoning 1,600 lawfully convicted rioters.
  10. It is immoral to endanger American lives by allowing the Health Department to make unscientific claims and establish guidelines that run counter to the findings of the AMA, APA, WHO and known science.
  11. It is illegal to deploy federal troops to suppress lawful protesters against the wishes of governors and mayors.
  12. It is immoral to hike health care costs, eliminate coverage protection, and shorten enrollment periods.
  13. It is stupid to threaten the removal of scientific and university funding if universities do not bow to the administration’s goals.
  14. It is illegal to blow up boats in international waters and illegal to kill the survivors.
  15. It is illegal to invade a foreign country without notifying congress while notifying private companies in advance.
  16. It is illegal to kidnap a foreign leader, regardless of how oppressive to their citizens.
  17. It is illegal to take over and run a sovereign nation.
  18. It is illegal to seize the assets and resources of a foreign country and hand them to oil companies.
  19. It is illegal to kill unarmed citizens in their cars.
  20. It is petty and below the dignity of a President to use words such as pussy, fat pig, scum, horseface, and shithole country, thereby degrading the level of public discourse.

The Trump government is directly undermining the foundations of American democracy. The opposition of both parties has been inadequate or non-existent. Now is the time for you to express your outrage loudly and clearly. Write letters to the editor. Write to your elected representatives. Call in to talk shows. Stand in protest on the streets. Take out ads in your newspapers.Never forget that the greatest threat to democracy is indifference.

  • I appreciate that you post the opinions of Valley residents. It’s always good to hear what people think about the important things in their lives

  • Thank you for posting, our country is in a very sad, dangerous place and our president and his clown appointees are a pure disgrace! For the life of me I don’t understand how this continues on a daily basis without action being taken by the government! How can this evil, racist, sexiest, felon who now we know was involved in child rape continue to be the head of our country? It’s very disturbing and makes us look like a joke around the world!

  • Thanks for your summation of our nation’s current precarious status. I’m 72 years old and have never witnessed this alarming degree of corruption, cruelty and threat to national security.

Much of our collective despair is our feeling of helplessness, as powerful lobbies and billionaires call the shots.

Still, we vote, participate in peaceful protest and try to glean our information from unbiased sources, which is not easy.

  • Thank you for the concise list of travesties of Trump and his minions. I will keep copies with me to give to people who just can’t or won’t understand the disaster they have bought into by voting for Trump.

  • If you are tempted to argue about this, please first re-read the Declaration of Independence and note the similarities between our early leaders an their grievances against the king of England. It’s uncannily similar when I read it in the current political environment.

  • Thank you for this clear and definitive enunciation of so much and so many transgressions of the immoral administration occupying the highest levels of our national federal government.
As a former teacher in the Snoqualmie Valley School District you were
formative in the lives of my children and I want to thank you dearly for that.
Currently some voices are suggesting that kids, having walked out of Mt Si HS in support of a more inclusive future and promoting inclusivity should in some way be ‘held to account. I so disagree with any need or desire for censure.
Goodness me, what is the future we envision?
Thank you Kit for your public service in our school district and to my kids.
I also want to share a personal story and you all may process it as you choose to. What I know is that it is true and absolutely counter to the country I believed I grew up and live in.
My niece, adopted when she was 5 in Vietnam from an orphanage by my brother, 20 years ago, is a fully naturalized US citizen, was hunted down annd zip-tied, by ICE, our federal government, and incarcerated in the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center in St Paul Minnesota
Please consider what vision of our country you support and believe in. For me, it is not this.
