A 66-year-old man from Bellevue was killed Thursday afternoon, June 19, after being struck by a vehicle while on foot along westbound Interstate 90 at milepost 23.
According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, the man ran from the right shoulder across to the left shoulder of I-90, where he was struck by a black 2015 Toyota Sequoia traveling westbound on the left shoulder.
The vehicle continued for approximately one mile before becoming disabled on the right shoulder. The driver, a 42-year-old man from Sammamish, left the scene on foot, heading westbound toward the Preston exit. He was later apprehended.
WSP indicated that drugs and alcohol may have been factors in the crash and listed the cause as suspected DUI. The driver was not injured and had been wearing a seatbelt. He may face possible charges of vehicular homicide, hit and run, and assault.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours and 41 minutes. The Washington State Patrol is continuing its investigation.
