North Bend Theatre welcomes Ski-Film Legend Mike Hattrup this Friday

North Bend Theatre launches its first-ever Science on Screen® event Friday with a landmark pairing of ski‑film history and real-world mountain science: a special screening of Blizzard of AAHHH’s (1988) with an in-person presentation from U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall‑of‑Famer and star of the film, Mike Hattrup.

It’s an evening rooted in the mountains we call home, blending the thrill of big‑mountain skiing with a firsthand look at stunning changes to frozen landscapes.

This event is the theatre’s first-ever Science on Screen® program, officially kicking off a series designed to bring science and movies together.

A Film That Rewired Ski Culture
When Blizzard of AAHHH’s arrived in 1988, it transformed skiing. Director Greg Stump’s high‑energy “rockumentary” followed Glen Plake, Scot Schmidt, and Mike Hattrup as they tackled the steep, wild terrain of France’s Chamonix, along with locations in Colorado, Utah, and California.

The film’s mix of attitude, music, and jaw‑dropping lines helped launch the modern era of extreme skiing and inspired countless skiers to push deeper into big‑mountain terrain.

Before the film, a rare first-hand look at a changing glacier
Before the movie begins, Hattrup, recently back from guiding a group to Antarctica will take the stage to share a story that resonates deeply with mountain communities like ours: his decades‑long observations of a glacier.

With more than thirty years of experience as a professional skier, guide, and innovator, Hattrup brings a uniquely personal perspective. His talk offers a grounded, real‑world look at how frozen environments are shifting in startling ways.
