North Bend Theatre Presents “Not All Heroes Wear Capes (Some Have Wings)”

The North Bend Theatre continues its Science on Screen® programming next Sunday, March 1, at 3 PM with Not All Heroes Wear Capes (Some Have Wings), a family-friendly event that combines real bat science with the high-energy fun of The LEGO Batman Movie.

The afternoon begins with a presentation by Niki Desautels of Bats Northwest, who will guide audiences through the surprising world of bats, how they navigate the night, the essential ecological roles they play, and why bats are truly a farmer’s best friend. Desautels, a longtime educator and community science volunteer, brings a warm, accessible approach to a subject often clouded by myth, enhanced by remarkable slow-motion footage of a bat pursuing an insect in flight.

“People are often surprised to learn how gentle and essential bats really are,” said Beth Burrows, owner of the North Bend Theatre. “Once you understand their role in our ecosystems, you start to see them not as something to fear, but as remarkable animals worth protecting.”

Following the presentation, the theatre will screen The LEGO Batman Movie, the hit animated adventure that finds Gotham’s most self-important vigilante learning the value of teamwork. The pairing offers a playful contrast: the caped crusader made of plastic bricks on screen, and the real winged heroes who work the night shift and quietly keep ecosystems running behind the scenes.

The program is part of Science on Screen®, a national initiative that pairs films with talks by scientists, engineers, and researchers who illuminate the real-world ideas behind the stories we see on screen. The North Bend Theatre is proud to be one of the independent cinemas participating in this nationwide program.
