On January 31, the Mount Si High School Girls Cross Country team was honored at the State Capitol for clinching their first-ever 4A State Cross Country Championship.
Senator Brad Hawkins and Senator Mark Mullet introduced Resolution 8650 to celebrate this significant achievement. The event was attended by North Bend’s Mayor Mary Miller, Coach Steven Crane, Athletic Director Jack Hill, members of the Snoqualmie Valley School District, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), and supportive parents, highlighting the community’s pride in the team’s victory.
The athletes shared their journey to success, emphasizing perseverance and teamwork. “I’m tired, but I’m going to finish for her,” reflected one runner, showcasing the team spirit that propelled them to victory.
Senator Hawkins praised the team for exemplifying the best of student-athletes, a sentiment echoed by Mayor Miller, “An achievement of this nature takes an extraordinary level of commitment, strength and immense support for each other as teammates,” she said. “And this is why they are State Champions.”
The championship took place last fall, with Mount Si High School demonstrating outstanding performance in the largest 4A classification, which features top runners from across Washington state.
Team members Aleeya Cossey and Hailey Cossey led the victory with impressive finishes, underscoring the unique nature of cross country, where individual efforts contribute to the team’s overall score.
Senator Hawkins, sharing his own background in cross country, said, “The sport of cross country is special because while runners compete based on individual effort, their total score is combined as one. This makes cross country a team effort.”
The Senators congratulated the team, coaches, and community on this historic accomplishment and extended wishes for continued success. The day at the Capitol served as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Mount Si Girls Cross Country team, forever marking their achievement in Washington State’s cross-country history.
Congratulations to Coach Steven Crane and the Mt. Si Girls Cross Country team for winning the 4A Cross Country State Championship!

Mount Si High School is in Snoqualmie, not North Bend. Where was Snoqualmie’s Mayor when the girls were honored?
