Mount Si Debate Team Explosive Growth | Showcase Event Offers Opportunity to See them in Action

Debate is considered by many a sport of the mind, a skill, an art – where debaters learn to  stand up and articulately defend a position on a particular topic.  It’s not easy.
Mount Si High School has an excellent Speech and Debate Team – one with a growing member base ready to step up and argue their points.
Parents be ready – “Because I said so”  – may no longer cut it.
Fresh off a very successful 2014-15 season that saw two MSHS teams battle for the State Speech and Debate Championship and then head off to nationals, as well as hosting a summer camp for middle schoolers, the debate team that started with four members last year has now has exploded to 72 students.
Showcase Speech and Debate Event – See What it’s All About
So on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, the Mount Si Debate Team is offering the community a chance to see what they do in a special Showcase Event in the Mount Si Auditorium from 6:30PM – 7:30PM.
The Showcase is essentially a practice round between the top two MSHS debate teams/pairs, including two seniors who are also National Merit Scholars, where they take on the tough topic of the Current Refugee Crisis.
MSHS Debate Booster President Angela Thompson commented on the team’s dramatic growth this year saying, “This is exceptional…and we are so thrilled to have opened the floodgates to a new activity.”
She explained that the explosive growth has led to a few logistical issues – like finding a large enough practice room to host the greatly expanded team. But she’s also excited, working on finding team members community service opportunities – getting them out there and being visible so more community members know what MSHS Speech & Debate is all about.
And they’ve set a big goal this year – hoping to double the number of students they take to the big California Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament at UC Berkeley.  They hope to take 24 team members this time around.
Good Luck MSHS Speech and Debate!
