Mount Si Boys Golf team earns state tournament berth

Could another sports team at Mount Si High School get a shot at winning a state title this school year? The answer is yes.

The Wildcat boys’ golf program this week received some great news. Coach Bob Bostwick informed Living Snoqualmie by email that he received word from KingCo officials on Monday that the league and SeaKing District had received three team berths to the 4A state high school boys’ golf tournament, to be held May 21st and 22nd over in Spokane.

Mount Si had finished third in last fall’s SeaKing District tournament -despite finishing as a co-league champion with Eastlake and Redmond High Schools – so there had been some question as to whether they would get a chance to compete at state. KingCo boys golf is competed as a fall sport whereas everywhere else in the state, including at the lower Valley’s Cedarcrest High School in Duvall, has boys golf competing as a spring sport. So each year the state championship happens at the end of the spring season.

Bostwick told us that he’ll be putting together his team’s state tournament plans in the coming weeks. They’ll be permitted to begin practicing again three weeks before the state tournament, at the beginning of May, and there are three tournaments coming up this spring as part of the Washington Junior Golf Association summer circuit that could allow the golfers a chance to get themselves back into competitive shape in advance of the state tourney.

The first of those is next weekend down in Olympia. With most of the top Wildcat golfers competing on the WJGA circuit, including the Warford brothers, Drew and Hogan, it can be expected they’ll at minimum look to compete in at least one of those events. In addition, considering that Drew, a junior, is the defending state 4A individual champion and is also the defending regional Pacific Northwest Golf Association boys’ amateur champion, the Wildcats will very much find themselves in the discussion as a title contender in the state tourney.

The state event will be held at the Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, which is a par-72 layout that is on the south end of the city off US Highway 195. The golfers will compete over a full 18 holes each day, with a cut after the first day. Normal golf competition during the regular season has the athletes compete over just nine holes.

Congratulations to the golfers, and good luck at state from us here at Living Snoqualmie!
