Izzy of the Northern Lights by North Bend local Kathy Hallstrom is a delightful and enchanting tale that transports readers to the mystical world of the Arctic, where the magic of the Northern Lights is as much a character as the vibrant protagonist, Izzy.
Hallstrom has deep roots in the valley, having been born and raised here. She graduated from Mt. Si High School in 1975 before leaving the valley, only to return and settle permanently in 2009. Her family’s connection to the valley dates back to the mid-1940s. Both of her parents grew up in the Snoqualmie Valley and graduated from Mount Si High School.
Kathy’s family has played a significant role in the community: her father and brother worked for Weyerhaeuser and Tanner Electric, and her dad was a founding member of the Sallal Water Association. Her mother contributed to the community as a camp cook at Camp Waskowitz. Additionally, her family was instrumental in constructing the Mt. Si Lutheran Church.
Writing this novel presented Kathy with numerous challenges. She began working on the book in 2007, fitting in writing whenever her busy life allowed. Despite experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s as early as 2000, she chose to ignore them and continue with her work. By 2012, however, the symptoms became unavoidable; by 2014, she had to leave the workforce.
After spending a couple of years in what she describes as a “pity party,” she found renewed purpose in writing. The cognitive difficulties associated with Parkinson’s made it challenging to find the right words, but she relied heavily on tools like the thesaurus, dictionary, spell-check, and an editor to overcome these obstacles. A quote by Michael J. Fox says Hallstrom encouraged her along the way. “If you can find something to be grateful for, then you can find something to look forward to and carry on.”
Hallstrom’s inspiration came from her teaching experiences in Wolf Point, Montana, on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. While teaching geography with an atlas and incorporating folklore stories from each continent, she noticed the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity about different places. This excitement led her to create “Izzy of the Northern Lights,” in which the protagonist travels across continents to save the Northern Lights and a mystical village.
Her book follows Izzy, a curious and adventurous young boy living in a small Arctic village. Izzy’s life turns when he discovers he has a unique connection to the Northern Lights, a phenomenon that has fascinated him since childhood.
As he embarks on a journey to understand his gift, he encounters various mythical creatures and learns about the deep-rooted legends of his people. The plot is filled with twists and turns, blending fantasy and folklore elements with real-life challenges those living in harsh, icy landscapes face. The Snoqualmie Valley and Bigfoot even make a surprise appearance in Chapter Five!
All hopes rest on Izzy, a young, skinny, blue-haired boy who seeks adventure and to find his purpose in the world. A challenge, seemingly doomed to failure, has been put forth that Izzy and a very special winged unicorn named Spirit Wind must win. If they fail, his village and the Northern Lights will be annihilated and forgotten forever.
Izzy is a wonderfully crafted protagonist. His curiosity, bravery, and kindness make him an endearing character that readers will root for from start to finish. The supporting cast, including his wise grandmother, loyal friends, and the enigmatic creatures of the Arctic, add depth and richness to the narrative. Each character is well-developed, with their own distinct personalities and contributions to Izzy’s journey.
Kathy Hallstrom’s writing is both lyrical and vivid. She paints the Arctic scenery with words that sparkle like the Northern Lights themselves. Her descriptions of the icy landscapes and magical phenomena are breathtaking, making readers feel as though they are right there with Izzy, experiencing the wonder and beauty of the Arctic firsthand.
The pacing is well-balanced, with enough action and suspense to keep readers engaged while also allowing for moments of reflection and growth.
The novel explores several themes, including the importance of heritage and tradition, the power of nature, and the journey of self-discovery. Izzy’s connection to the Northern Lights symbolizes his link to his ancestors and the natural world, emphasizing the significance of understanding and preserving one’s cultural heritage. Additionally, the story touches on themes of friendship, courage, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
Izzy of the Northern Lights is a captivating and heartwarming read that will appeal to readers of all ages. Kathy Hallstrom has crafted a magical tale that entertains, inspires, and educates. With its enchanting storyline, memorable characters, and beautiful prose, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure, fantasy, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Northern Lights.
The vivid Arctic setting in the novel was carefully researched, with the story beginning in a fictional village in Greenland. Kathy incorporated folklore by featuring legendary creatures from each continent, with each having a unique role in the story. Kathy hopes young readers will learn the value of teamwork, patience, friendship, and sacrifice through Izzy’s adventures.
Overall, Izzy of the Northern Lights is a shining gem in literature. Its story will linger in readers’ hearts and minds long after turning the final page.

A powerful and true to the heart request. My hat is off to you, Melissa.
I did work with her father or brother. Old school and old community. Having stood late nights since childhood, looking into the stars and planets. Every winter looking into the Northern lights of Churchill, Manitoba Canada. 0r above the muskox at Fairbanks University. (online)
The northern lights are a visual to what protects or planet and ALL that live here. This sounds like a must read for me, win or lose.
Accordingly, probably purchase a few more for family and friends.
Thank you, Melissa.
