Drivers traveling SE Issaquah Fall City Road should prepare for lane restrictions and delays as King County Road Services begins a multi-day chip seal project in early September.
Contractor crews will be working between SE Duthie Hill Road and 329th Avenue SE, applying chip seal on multiple stretches of roadway, including:
- SE Issaquah Fall City Road between 328th Way SE and SE 40th Street
- SE Issaquah Fall City Road between SE Duthie Hill Road and SE 40th Street
- 328th Way SE between 329th Avenue SE and SE Issaquah Fall City Road
The work is scheduled to take place between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. from September 2 to 12, 2025. Crews are not expected on site every day, as the road must cure between steps, but Saturday work is likely. Traffic will be guided through the work zone by a pilot car, and drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
Officials urge drivers to proceed very slowly in the construction area to help keep gravel on the ground. The schedule may change depending on weather, equipment, materials, or crew availability.
What Is Chip Seal?
Chip seal is a process designed to extend the life of roads by sealing cracks and improving traction. Crews spray asphalt mixed with water on the surface, then spread and roll in a layer of crushed gravel chips. After curing for one to two days, loose gravel is swept away, and a final sealant is applied.

While chip seal is less durable than asphalt overlay, it is significantly more cost-effective. With limited funding, King County uses chip seal as a practical way to maintain more miles of neighborhood roads across unincorporated areas.
Addressing Concerns
Road Services notes that loose gravel will be swept up after curing and that crews will work to protect driveway connections and drainage. Officials also emphasize the importance of drivers going slowly in the work zone to prevent gravel from being thrown up. Feedback from residents helps improve coordination with contractors on current and future projects.
