North Bend’s NE 12th Street Reconstruction Project starts in early August

On July 17, 2018 the North Bend City Council approved a construction contract that will finally fix often-complained-about  NE 12th Street.

Long-awaited street improvements to NE 12th Street are planned to begin August 6th. Residents along NE 12th Street and in the Silver Creek neighborhood will be impacted by upcoming road closures as NE 12th Street between Ballarat Avenue NE and Pickett Avenue NE is fixed.

The project includes:

• Installation of a new water main, water services and additional fire hydrants

• Installation of three new floodway culverts

• Installation of bio-swales

• Reconstruction of the roadway, including new pavement, minor shoulder widening,  pavement markings and street signage

During reconstruction, NE 12th Street will be closed and will require a detour through the Silver Creek neighborhood utilizing NE 6th Street.

Via press release the City said it would like to thank residents in advance for their patience in helping them complete this much-needed street project, which will improve public safety and traffic mobility.

City Councilmembers rated this project near the top of the city’s Transportation Improvement Plan and are excited to see the elimination of the heaving pavement and other street defects.

Note: This right-of-way borders unincorporated King County and the City of North Bend; property owners abutting the northern edge of 12th Street live in unincorporated King County and property owners abutting the southern edge of 12th Street live in North Bend. This road was originally constructed by King County prior to various storm water regulations that are now in place. The new road will meet current road standards with thicker pavement, sufficient gravel base and new corrugated metal pipe culverts.

The City of North Bend will be funding this new and improved infrastructure that will benefit residents from both the city and unincorporated King County.

NE 12th Street will be open for emergency access and local access at all times. Construction is anticipated to last approximately 10 weeks beginning on August 6th, weather dependent.

Public Works Director Mark Rigos said the city will also coordinate with the school district as the project will still be underway when school resumes in late August.
