Perched upon the Duvall Bridge, the town’s iconic trolls have been brought back to life, thanks to the whimsical touch and artistic vision of local talent Randy Berg.
A lifelong resident of Duvall and Cedarcrest High School graduate, Berg recently transformed her childhood fascination into a magical restoration project, reawakening these beloved wooden creatures for a new generation of passersby to enjoy.
Randy Berg’s connection to the trolls is steeped in enchantment and nostalgia. Growing up in Duvall, she would often gaze at these charming guardians of the bridge, imagining the stories they might tell. In 2014, as a young student, Berg got her first brush with troll magic, helping to repaint them as part of a school project. Now, years later, driven by the same wonder that first captured her imagination, she has returned with paintbrush in hand and a heart full of inspiration to restore these gentle creatures with a vibrant new look.
“When I saw the trolls needed some love, I felt compelled to bring them back to life,” said Berg. With NE Woodinville Duvall Road closed for repairs for almost six weeks this summer, she saw the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into the artwork. Collaborating with Bruce Edwards, the original troll creator, and with the enthusiastic support of the Duvall Cultural Commission and Duvall City Council, Berg embarked on an artistic adventure that would revitalize these endearing creatures.
Berg’s process was nothing short of magical. Armed with fresh MDO plywood to replace the weathered boards, she carefully traced the trolls’ original forms, preserving every quirky detail that gave them their character. Each troll was lovingly repainted, layer by layer, in vibrant hues and sealed with epoxy resin along the edges to protect them from the elements. A final topcoat ensured that these whimsical guardians would continue to smile upon bridge-crossers for years to come.
“I’m so happy with how they turned out,” Berg said. “Now, especially with the sun shining on them, they look so bright and full of life – just like our town.” Berg gave credit and gratitude to her friends, family, and the city, who pitched in with everything from power tools to paintbrushes. It was truly a labor of love that brought the community together.
The trolls, now radiant and refreshed, have reclaimed their spots on the Duvall Bridge, ready to delight and surprise all who pass by. And these aren’t the only magical touches appearing around the town; the City of Duvall has recently added a variety of new public artworks, bringing color and creativity to different corners of the community. With even more art projects on the way, Duvall is becoming a vibrant canvas for local talent, making it a true destination for art lovers and curious visitors alike.
“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Duvall Cultural Commission, the City Council, and dedicated local artists like Randy Berg, we continue to enhance our city with art that brings joy and creativity to our community,” said City of Duvall Mayor Amy Ockerlander. “The restoration of the beloved bridge trolls is a perfect example of how Duvall is committed to creating a vibrant place where public art reflects the spirit of our town.”
Whether you are a local or a visitor, the City of Duvall invites you to slow down, take in the view, and meet the trolls who once again stand watch over this charming community.
