Culvert Replacement on Middle Fork Road Leads to BIG Discovery, Project Delay

The King County Roads Division closed SE Middle Fork Road in the North Bend area on August 5, 2013 and planned to re-open the road on August 30th, but that re-opening date hit one very large snag recently.

The 49000 block of SE Middle Fork Road is closed while King County Roads replace a deteriorating culvert with a new one that allows for fish passage.  The county is also making improvements to better stabilize the river bank, as the deteriorating culvert is high on its drainage priority list.

While digging to replace the aging culvert, though, crews uncovered a very large (more like HUGE)  boulder buried in the construction area.  That massive boulder is now estimated to delay the project until mid-September.  King County Roads tweeted a photo of the large uncovered rock Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

SE Middle Fork Road leads to popular local hiking areas.  Traffic from the road closure is being detoured onto SE Lake Dorothy Road for the duration of construction.
