Teen dies after bridge jumping into Snoqualmie River

UPDATE | July 14th, 9:45PM

City of Snoqualmie PIO Joan Pliego sadly confirmed the 17-year old male died after bridge jumping into the Snoqualmie River Tuesday afternoon. See full story below.

ORIGINAL STORY

City of Snoqualmie Public Information Officer Joan Pliego said at 4:40PM on July 14, 2020 a 911 call reported a male had jumped off the old Reinig Road railway trestle bridge (now part of the Snoqualmie Valley Trail) into the Snoqualmie River and did not surface.

Pliego said search and rescue crews were called to help locate the 17-year old male. She did not know if the teen was from the Snoqualmie Valley.

Crews recovered the male around 5:30PM and were transported him to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue. (Initially Pliego stated Harborview, but SFD said crews diverted to Overlake.)

Snoqualmie Fire Chief Mark Correira said crews performed CPR after recovering the teen and described him as in critical condition.

According to King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Sgt. Ryan Abbott, witnesses said the 17-year old was attempting to do a back flip from the very top of the trestle when he landed in the river.

KCSO Marine Unit, as well as swift water rescue teams, and KCSO Guardian 1 helicopter searched the river in the Meadowbrook area of Snoqualmie where the trestle is located. It is a popular river jumping spot of local teens.

Witnesses reported roads were closed in the area as emergency crews responded.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
