Waskom siblings sweep KingCo cross country championships, Now off to State

The Mount Si High School distance running duo of Hannah and Joe Waskom had a busy day Saturday, October 22, 2016. First they joined their cross-country teammates at the KingCo 4A Championship Meet, where they both took first place, and then hit the podium in their Homecoming attire and headed off to the dance.

Sophomore Joe won the 5,000 meter boys race at Lake Sammamish State Park with a time of 15:30.66 and Senior Hannah took the girls 5,000 meter race in a time of 18:28.22.

The Mount Si Girls Team finished in second place, securing the team a trip to the State Championships in Pasco on November 5th. The boys team finished in third place and although it did not earn a state championships team berth, three individual runners qualified – Joe Waskom (1), Grant Baker (12) and Jackson Stokes (14), who all finished in the required top 14.

The Mount Si Girls also had three runners finish in the top 14 – Waskom (1), Chloe Cosgrove (7), and Lindsey Sydnor – who hadn’t competed all season due to a stress fracture, but still finished in 11th place.

This will be the second year in a row the Mount Si Girls Cross Country Team has qualified for the State Championships – something it previously hadn’t done in 40 years. Last year the Mount Si ladies finished in third place (team), with Hannah Waskom running a personal best and finishing in second place overall.

Joe has a goal of finishing in the top 5 in his second trip to state this year. As a freshman he finished in 18th place.

Hannah recently verbally committed to running at the University of Washington next year.  She had also been recruited by Dartmouth and Columbia, but her mom says UW program was the best fit for Hannah.
