Student, Firecracker Start Brush Fire at Twin Falls Middle School

There was a bit of excitement at Twin Falls Middle School Wednesday, May 14, 2014, when students reported a fire near the school football field around 12:45PM.

Students said the small fire happened at the far end of the field in a brushy area  – opposite of the school’s portables where class was in session for some.

Snoqualmie Valley School District Public Information Officer, Carolyn Malcolm, explained that a student lit a firecracker and threw it over the fence into the woods, adjacent the school track, which started the small brush fire.

An administrator supervising students saw it happen and reported the incident. 911 was called and Eastside Fire & Rescue Engine 87 responded quickly. Three fire trucks arrived at the school, but only one was needed.

An Eastside Fire and Rescue dispatch report stated that when the fire was first was reported it was about 12 x 12 feet and grew to 20 x 50 feet . Firefighters had the brush fire controlled and out shortly after 1PM.  The King County Sheriff’s Office was also called.

The incident during lunch period (for portion of students) when kids were allowed outside to enjoy the nice weather.

According to the Twin Falls Middle School handbook, “Possession of and/or igniting fireworks or explosive devices will be subject to disciplinary action which could result in emergency expulsion from school.”
