In May, City of North Bend Director of Community and Economic Development confirmed the site of a massive April 2014 natural gas explosion that destroyed a small North Bend strip mall, restaurant under construction and neighboring barber shop had been sold.
At that time Estep could only confirm that the developer was planning to build an approximate 5,000 sq. ft. mixed-use building with retail and residential components – AND that the city was working with the developer to improve the entrance to Torguson Park located behind the site.
This week, the City of North Bend released more information about the future development that will bring new life to the empty site at 540 E. North Bend Way.
Phoenix Plaza
The name of the proposed development touches on symbolism. According to mythology, the Phoenix symbolizes re-birth, as the mythical bird obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.
According to the mixed-use project’s Application Notice, the three-story development, called Phoenix Plaza, will have 5,200 sq. ft. of ground floor office and retail space, along with a structured parking lot.
The second and third floors will be 32 residential apartments, along with 2,000 sq. ft. of ground-level open space for tenants.
In addition to the retail and residential components, the development will also have a [nearly] 4,200 sq. ft. public pedestrian plaza facing North Bend Way and a pedestrian pathway connecting North Bend Way to Torguson Park.
The project is subject to an environmental review, as well as a city review process to make sure it is consistent with and meets all City of North Bend development regulations and policies and its Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

Great to see some plan opportunities for the site. I am wondering what the renderings will look like with a 3 storied building where one of the best town views is? Do we really want multi storied buildings along the North Bend Way that will block the stunning views of Mt Si and beyond? Just a question..

Encyclopedias have it listed as the same spelling at the city so maybe it can be either:)
Phoenix with that or similar spelling (phoinix) has Latin and Greek roots from around 900AD, somewhat before Arizona was a twinkle in someone’s eye.
I sure hope the plans don’t call for one of those boringly square box buildings, cheap to construct and cheap ever after. Please, North Bend, let’s ensure we have long term development strategy that includes a unifying architectural style, and not just a willy nilly building policy catering to whomever supplies the most palm grease.

I agree with James. The 3 stories may be too high and will block the view. In fact, we should tear down all the buildings and houses in North Bend so we can have an unobstructed view of the whole city.
