‘Officer Kim’ Named New School Resource Officer in Safety Partnership between District and Police Department

The City of Snoqualmie recently selected longtime Snoqualmie Police Officer Kim Stonebraker as its new School Resource Officer (SRO), appointing her as the liaison between the Snoqualmie Valley School District and the Snoqualmie Police Department(SPD).

A familiar place around the Valley, 17-year SPD veteran Officer Stonebraker will be based at Mount Si High School, but will have a presence at all district schools. “Officer Kim,” as she is known by many residents, will help the school district address issues affecting safety, security and the efficiency of the school system – as well as support positive environments for students and staff.

 Mount Si High School Principal John Belcher said, “We are ecstatic to welcome Officer Kim Stonebraker to our Wildcat community.” He added, “She brings compassion, empathy and a deep desire to make a difference with our youth.”

Belcher described Stonebaker as being one of the “best possible people” to take on the new School Resource Officer role.  As a longtime Snoqualmie Police Department and community member, Officer Kim joins Mount Si High School already knowing many students and families – and those families are very familiar with her kind and caring approach.

Snoqualmie Police Chief Steve McCulley said, “The School Resource Officer program is another excellent example of an effective partnership between the Snoqualmie Police Department and the Snoqualmie Valley School District in an ongoing effort to ensure the safest possible environment for students, staff and parents.”

Stonebraker joined the Snoqualmie Police Department in 1997. Chief McCulley says she is an outstanding representative of the department, “being uniquely qualified and experienced to enhance school security and foster effective relationships.”

McCulley believes the SRO program will allow SPD to significantly enhance its community oriented policing efforts.

According to a city press release, Officer Stonebraker’s new SRO duties include:

• Preparing and conducting public awareness programs and class presentations
• Patrolling an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations
• Ensuring buildings are secure
• Intervening in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order
• Performing initial and follow-up investigations of crimes involving adults and juveniles
• Multiple other public safety duties

She will also maintain positive working relationships with the King County Juvenile Court, Child Protective Services, Department of Health Services and other agencies related to youth.

Officer Stonebraker said, “I am very happy to be here with the students and will do my best to connect students, parents, and staff to all the resources they need. I am here as a counselor, friend and an officer.”
