North Bend’s Sallal Grange announced last week that it is the first non-construction-related organization to build a tiny house for the Nickelsville Tiny House Village, a new community serving homeless individuals located on a residential lot owned by the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Seattle’s Central District.
The Sallal Grange is working alongside other volunteer organizations to build one of fifteen homes for the Nickelsville Tiny House Village of Seattle. Created in partnership with the Low Income Housing Institute, Nickelsville and the Church, the innovative Village will be the first of its kind in Seattle.
The Tiny House build will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Sallal Grange, located at 12912 432nd Ave SE (corner of North Bend Way and 432nd) in North Bend.
Sallal Grange members invite the community welcome to come and watch the tiny house take shape, learn more about the project and find out how to get involved.
Each tiny house for the village costs about $2,300 to construct and is a simple structure that includes one window and one door. Electricity is limited to a ventilation fan and one LED light per unit. The house will be stay at the Sallal Grange site and be available for viewing until it is moved to Seattle in December.
According to the Sallal Grange, most organizations volunteering to build the 8′ x 12′ village houses are construction training programs managed through community colleges, including the Tulalip Tribe TERO Pre-Apprenticeship Program and Sawhorse Revolution, a non-profit that trains high school students.
Per a press release, when completed Nickelsville will manage the Tiny House Village with residents will providing 24-hour security and a democratic management system. Village residents will be selected by length of time they have been in other Nickelsville tent projects.
