Lane shifts to start near Phoenix Plaza project in North Bend to repair faulty contractor work

The City of North Bend said starting the week of March 23rd, vehicles traveling westbound along East North Bend Way near the new Phoenix Plaza project will be intermittently shifted into the eastbound lane.

The lane shift will be in place for the next few weeks and is needed to finish the Phoenix Plaza [private] development. It is not associated North Bend’s nearby roundabout project.

According to the city, the lane shift is required to replace portions of recently installed utility pipes that did not meet city standards. The utility contractor that performed that work was fired due to poor workmanship and multiple safety violations.

Local utility contractor, Westerlund Excavation, has been retained by the Phoenix Plaza developer to repair and complete the work.

The city said it will employ inspection coverage during construction to ensure work and traffic control meets or exceeds its standards.  The utility re-installation, traffic control, and inspection coverage will be paid for by the developer and not city taxpayers.

Hours of work will be from about 7AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday. The lane shift will be similar to previous shifts during the past few months.

The city said it recognizes the construction could be an inconvenience, saying it will continue to make public safety it number one priority.
