FREE Teen Driving Course Comes to Area this Weekend, Pro Drag Racer’s Mission to Help Families Avoid his Tragedy

A different kind of driving school is coming to Pacific Raceways this weekend – one offered by Put on the BRAKES (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe), a non-profit started by drag racing star Doug Herbert after he lost his sons in a tragic car accident in 2008.

His son was driving too fast, lost control and hit another vehicle. The passenger in the car was his 12-year old brother. The boys were about a half-mile from home when they died instantly. Since the accident, Doug and his foundation have been on a mission to teach teens additional driving techniques and prevent more tragedies like theirs from occurring.

Put On The B.R.A.K.E.S mission is to prevent injuries and save lives by training and educating teenage drivers and their parents about the importance of safe and responsible driving.  They go a step beyond conventional driver’s ed using a Teen Pro-Active Driving Course that addresses driving situations responsible for many traffic accidents involving teens.

There’s still room to register your teen for these driving classes – just off SR 18 and not far from the Snoqualmie Valley. You can find out more and/or register HERE

The driving class and course offered this weekend focuses on accident avoidance using a slalom course to teach elevated steering control; a Distraction Exercise to teach increased focus and concentration; a Wheel Drop-Off Recovery Exercise to teach the proper method of retaining control when the vehicle drops a wheel off a highway shoulder; a Panic Stop Exercise to give teenagers safer and more controlled responses when braking in an emergency; a Car Control and Recovery Exercise that teaches the skills necessary to maintain or regain control in wet or icy road conditions.
