Business Comings and Goings: Hot Topic Replacing Sawdust Coffee at North Bend Premium Outlets

Clueless mom alert! Don’t tell Hot Topic clothing store, but someone recently sent an email with the subject title, ‘Hot topic.’ Then the email simply said “Coming May 28th.”

I responded, “What is coming?”  You see, I assumed whatever was coming to the North Bend Outlet Mall WAS a ‘hot topic’ and the sender just forgot to tell me what store was coming.  Duh.

Los Angeles-based, Hot Topic, IS the store – and apparently a big deal with tween/teen girls – my own daughter included. (I am the clueless mom in case you hadn’t guessed.)

So, coming May 28, 2014, to the North Bend Premium Outlets is Hot Topic.  It is replacing Sawdust Coffee, at 461 Southfork Ave, which recently closed its doors. Until now, the closest Hot Topic stores were at Southcenter Mall and the Supermall in Auburn.

What is Hot Topic – for other clueless parents out there

Started in 1988 as a music-inspired accessory store, Hot Topic introduced band t-shirts in 1990 – their huge seller.  As the company grew, they addedhottopic rock-inspired clothing lines, expanded the band t-shirts to include about 50 bands and added more clothing inspired by cartoon, cult movie and comic books.

Hot Topic, with about 60 stores, began public trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1996. Today, the store has about 600 locations nationwide (and a popular website) offering band-related apparel and accessories, licensed merchandise and fashion apparel and accessories.

Tween/Teen girls rejoice.  Parents beware.  There’s a new reason to hit the Outlet Mall. Welcome to the Eastside Hot Topic.

Sawdust Coffee, thanks for all the years of coffee and smoothies during shopping outings.  You’ll be missed by many.

Hot Topic store will soon occupy the former home of Sawdust Coffee at the North Bend Premium Outlets - May 28, 2014.
