Be the Change Leadership Conference Set to Inspire Student Leaders Saturday, May 4th

Snoqualmie Valley Community Network is hosting their 6th annual Be The Change Leadership Conference for area middle and high school students this Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Chief Kanim Middle School.

Nationally recognized speaker and innovator, Nigel Wrangham, will ignite youth discussions, using games and creative thinking to focus on the topics of leadership, community organizing and prevention.

Student leaders in the Sno-Valley and Riverview Youth Councils picked topics for this year’s dicussion sessions, topics they feel addresss difficult issues faced by local teens.  (Teen facilitators and  Snoqualmie Valley professionals will be on hand during the sessions.) Discussion will focus on promoting healthy choices  in the areas of:

  • Media culture and how it can influence youth
  • Stress management and dealing with depression and anxiety
  • Defining healthy relationships and raising awareness about domestic violence
  • Substance abuse – alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs and other drugs
  • Effects of substance abuse on brain development
  • Financial responsibility
  • Youth suicide prevention
  • How do police respond to particular situations?

Be the Change runs from 8:30AM – 3:30PM, May 4th, at Chief Kanim Middle School in Fall City. There’s still time to register at www.bethechange2013.eventbrite.com.  Attendees will be served breakfast and lunch (no charge), receive a commemorative t-shirt and be entered into prize drawing for iPad Mini and a variety of gift cards.
