Summer berries inspire special Pie Baking Class at Mt. Si Senior Center, August 15th

Some of my fondest childhood memories were learning to bake pies from my grandmother. My grandparent’s home had apple and pear trees, blackberry, raspberry and blueberries bushes. I spend summers being sent to yard to pick fruit that my grandma and I then used to bake pies.

To carry on that tradition my children and I now pick blackberries each summer around the neighborhood and I have taught them to bake pies, with my youngest child making her first one around the age of 10.

To me summer = pies. And apparently the Mt. Si Senior Center also feels the same way and has launched a new class inspired by summer AND berries.

It’s berry season, which means it’s also homemade pie season, the perfect time for a pie-making class at Mt. Si Senior Center.

Joy Lund, the center’s Cordon-Bleu executive chef, will teach a summer berries-themed class, 7PM to 9PM on Thursday, August 15th.

Lund will send every participant home with the skills to whip up their own summer berry pies. No baking experience is necessary. Participants must be age 13 or older; family groups are welcome.

The class fee is $50 which includes all the ingredients needed for the class, as well as the fancy pie plate that each participant will bring his or her own home-made pie home in.

Summer Berry Pies is the center’s first offering in a planned series of quarterly baking classes with Chef Lund, said Mt. Si Senior Center Programs and Volunteer Coordinator Dee Riley.

The class is expected to fill up quickly, so register early, by calling Mt. Si Senior Center at 425-888-3434.
