Small Landslide at I-90/SR 18 interchange over the weekend

A small landslide greeted Snoqualmie area drivers early Saturday morning, April 14, 2018.  It was first reported on WSDOT’s social media feed around 6AM.

The slide occurred on SR 18 underneath I-90 – right between the east and westbound overpasses – blocking the right eastbound SR 18 lane. No cars were involved. The slide looked to be about 50 to 75 feet long.

WSDOT had crews on scene to begin cleanup around 8AM. Drivers were able to get by using the left eastbound lane and median area, with backups pretty minimal as of 8:45AM.

By 10AM WSDOT had brought in large machinery to scoop mud and tress from the roadway.  Crews were still at work at 7PM, with WSDOT reporting the lane closure would remain in place overnight. One left turn lane on the eastbound I-90 off-ramp to SR 18 was also closed.

The cleanup work finished and the lane reopened Sunday evening.

The Puget Sound region has received over three inches of rain during the first two weeks of April. According to the National Weather Service, this is only the 4th time in 120 years of record keeping this has occurred.

In the Snoqualmie Valley, rain totals for the same period were much higher, though. According to northbendweather.com, over NINE inches of rain fell between April 1st – 14th.  Eastside foothill communities typically receive more rain that the Seattle/Bellevue area.
