Granite Mountain Avalanche Claims Life; Injuries at Mt. Si and Tiger Mountain

It was a busy Saturday for search and rescue crews in the Snoqualmie Valley.

King County Search and Rescue crews and Guardian 2 helicopter responded Saturday evening, March 22, 2014, to Granite Mountain near granitemtSnoqualmie Pass to aid in the rescue of at least one person who was reported trapped in an avalanche.

King County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant, Cindi West, reported via Twitter later Saturday night that one person had walked away from the avalanche, but the search was continuing for the other missing person.  Guardian 2 reported it was unable to locate the possible victim using its deployed avalanche beacon.

West reported Sunday morning, March 23rd, that the missing male had been located and had unfortunately died in the avalanche.

Granite Mountain is located off I-90 near the Denny Creek (47) exit. According to the Washington Trails Association website, early in the year the upper mountain is covered in snow and ice and the upper slopes are VERY avalanche prone.

According to its Twitter feed, King County Search and Rescue crews also responded to Mt. Si and Tiger Mountain on Saturday for injured hikers.
